Do you offer it online?
No. Kinesiology can not be taught using just books, DVD's or online resources. Kinesiology is a hands on skill that requires much complex psycho-motor skills and interpersonal skills to be used properly. These skills cannot be taught without direct hand-on human intervention.
- If you were in a car crash would you want the paramedic who responded to have real practical hands on experience or just books smarts and internet courses?
- When you got to the emergency room how comfortable would you feel if the Registered Nurse taking care of you admits that they only watched training videos and never actually touched a patient was treating you?
- NZQA rates the skill set of an kinesiologist as higher and more complex than either of these two professions. If you wouldn't accept it for them why would you ever accept it from a kinesiologist?
Do I have to show up for classes?
Yes, kinesiology is a hands on skill that requires direct face to face practice to learn. We use experiential learning which means that half of our "class" time is actually hands-on practice of these skills.
ICPKP requires 100% attendance at all classes. This is required by academic regulatory and licensing agencies.
What if I miss a class?
Classes can be made up at another location, or depending on the class at another time.
Depending on the sequencing of the class it may prevent you from taking any addition classes that it was a prerequisite for.
Students in good standing may elect to pay for private tutoring from a Faculty member to make up for the lost the class time.
Can I just take 1 or 2 classes that I want?
Most classes have pre-requisites so it is unlikely that you can take just any class.
If you are unsure about the program you may take the TRY 3 BKP program which is just the first 3 modules (BKP 101, 102 & 103).
Once you get your BKP certificate there are many classes that you take as a non-matriculated student.
I've been practicing as a kinesiologist for many years, why can't I take the advanced classes?
The level of practice that an ICPKP kinesiologist practices at requires a solid foundation in both theory and practical application. Academic and Licensing agencies require these competencies to be evaluated by the faculty in order to grant them college credit, and meet licensing requirements.
If you have been practicing for quite some time and wish to upgrade your skills this process should not take long and will allow you to polish up your existing skills while you are learning new ones.
I already have a professional license why do I need to take the BKP program?
You license is for another profession. One with a skill set radically different from kinesiology. The BKP program gives you a solid foundation and skill set to work with to ensure client and practitioner safety when using kinesiology.
This fact has already been recognized at this college by the various licensed professionals who have taken our program. This list includes Acupuncture, Massage, Medicine, Nursing, and Social Work to name a few. All of them acknowledge the drastic differences between their prior profession and the profession of kinesiology, even as they choose to apply it to their profession.
Ethically and legally it provides you with protection. All professions consider it unethical to use a skill on a client that you have not been properly trained in. It also gives you legal protection as it proves that you have been properly trained, tested and have passed board exams to qualify you for professional licensure as a kinesiologist.
I already have a professional license can't I just take Continuing Education classes?
It is hard to take continuing education in something if you have never had primary education in it. This may be problematic in your professional life depending on how often or how much you plan on using it in your practice.
If you plan on using it a s a small part of your profession then you can probably suffice with continuing education in a focused areas. If however you plan to change you practice patterns significantly to include kinesiology as a recognizable part of your practice you may be exposing yourself to liability for practicing without proper professional education in the field.
All professions consider it unethical to use a skill on a client that you have not been properly trained in. Continuing Education courses do not provide adequate training to advertise yourself as a kinesiologist or to state that you offer these services as a significant part of your practice.
I already have a professional license do I have to take all the classes?
Possibly not. If you have a license as a a health care provider you may be able to obtain RPL or CBE status for parts of the program that you have covered in your previous professional program. This is individualized based up on your program and will need to be discussed with a faculty member.
What is a matriculated student?
Matriculate student is one who is enrolled in a certificate or diploma program. They are committed to completing an entire course of study and have signed up for an entire program (i.e. BKP certificate, Professional Diploma, Advanced Diploma) or program year.
Non-Matriculated student is one who only taking a few classes, and is not yet committed to completing an entire program. Part time students are considered non-matriculated.
